Choosing an office whiteboard: what actually matters
Most whiteboards fail slowly. The surface ghosts, the tray fills with dead markers, the board is bolted to the one wall nobody faces, and within a year, the team is sketching on a laptop instead. The boards on this page are built to avoid that, and the decision comes down to four things: the writing surface, whether the board needs to move, whether it needs to do a second job, and how it looks in the room.
Surface first. Painted steel is the cheap option and the one that ghosts. Ceramic steel (enamel fired onto steel) and tempered glass both wipe clean for decades, and both hold magnets. Glass wins on looks and on colour; ceramic steel wins on price and on being lighter to hang. Everything on this page is one or the other.
Then mobility. A wall-mounted board belongs in a room with a fixed purpose: a meeting room, a project room, a training space. A mobile whiteboard belongs anywhere the layout changes, which in an agile office is most of it. Double-sided mobile boards give a team two working surfaces and a way to carry the work from the desk cluster to the huddle space without photographing it first.
Mobile whiteboards on castors
A mobile whiteboard earns its place when it does more than roll. The Frame Mobile Glass Whiteboard is a double-sided magnetic glass board in a bentwood frame with a handle built into the top rail, designed for Lintex by Halleroed and Matti Klenell. Two sizes, twenty-four glass colours in MOOD-GLASS® or SILK-GLASS®, and a choice of light grey or solid oak feet and frame. It is the board for a workplace where the furniture was specified rather than ordered from a catalogue.
The Sedus se:Lab Whiteboards take the opposite approach: light, double-sided, magnetic, and made to be picked up. Post-it notes stick to them, which sounds trivial until you have watched a sprint board slide off a painted wall. Pair them with the se:Lab Caddy, a trolley that carries the boards upright on both sides so a team can write on them where they stand and wheel the whole session to the next room.
The Trunk Mobile Whiteboard from Cascando is an enamelled steel writing surface on one side and an upholstered pinboard on the other, on large braking castors, with a felt pocket on the side for pens and magnets. Specify it with the sound-absorbing PET core, and it becomes a room divider that quiets the space it divides. Two widths.
Glass whiteboards
Glass whiteboards are the boards people photograph for the office fit-out case study. The Lintex Mood Space Whiteboards are modular magnetic glass panels in twenty-four colours that butt together to make a continuous writing wall as long as the room allows. The glass is tempered and low-iron, so a white panel reads white rather than the green tint of standard float glass, and the colour behind it comes through true. From £427 per panel ex VAT.
The Frame Whiteboard puts the same magnetic glass in an oak bentwood frame with softened corners. The frame is not decoration: its lower rail is the shelf for markers, erasers and magnets, so the board stays tidy without a tray bolted underneath. Four glass colours with oak, or two monochrome versions where the frame matches the glass.
The Offset Wall Glass Whiteboard goes further. The glass sits recessed inside a 46 mm solid FSC-certified oak frame, so it reads as a framed piece rather than a whiteboard, until someone writes on it. Made in Sweden, twenty-four colours, and built for a lifespan measured in decades. £1,384 ex VAT, installed.
Ceramic steel and magnetic whiteboards
Where the budget or the wall calls for something lighter than glass, the Lintex Air Whiteboards are ceramic steel with a bevelled white edge and concealed fixings, so the board appears to float a few millimetres off the wall. The surface is e3 ceramic steel, magnetic, 99% recyclable and covered by a thirty-year warranty on the writing surface. It is the board we specify most often for meeting rooms where the client wants a clean wall and no visible frame.
All the glass boards on this page are magnetic too. The difference in practice is the strength of magnet you need: ceramic steel holds a standard office magnet; glass needs neodymium magnets, which we supply with every glass board.
Acoustic whiteboards and room dividers
Open-plan offices have two recurring problems: nowhere to write and too much noise. Two boards here address both. The Mood Fabric Mobile Whiteboard is a magnetic glass board with a sound-absorbent fabric-covered back, in ten colour combinations, on optional black or grey feet or castors. The small model is full glass on the front; the large model splits the front between glass and textile so it absorbs from both sides. The Trunk, above, does the same job in enamelled steel with a pinboard back. Either one parked between two desk clusters is a whiteboard, a pinboard and an acoustic screen for the price of one piece of furniture.
Wall-mounted or mobile: how to decide
Wall-mounted boards (Air, Frame, Offset, Mood Space) suit rooms with a fixed function and a wall people face. They are cheaper per square metre of writing surface, they never wander off, and they can run the length of a wall. Mobile boards (Frame Mobile, se:Lab, Trunk, Mood Fabric) suit open-plan and agile spaces, project teams that move, and any office where you would rather not drill into a glass partition or a landlord's wall.
