Open-plan offices work best when people can tell, at a glance, where focus areas end and collaboration areas begin. Walls do that, but they are expensive, permanent and block light. Office planters do the same job with greenery instead of plasterboard. A row of planter dividers can separate a bank of desks from a walkway, screen a breakout zone or frame a reception area, and you can move them when your layout changes.

That flexibility is why planters have become a standard part of commercial fit-outs. They bring the principles of biophilic design into the workplace: the idea that people feel calmer and more settled in spaces with natural elements. Types of office planter

Mobile planter dividers. Freestanding planter units on castors, such as the Kew, C2, se:Lab and Woods planters. Use them to create movable boundaries between teams, or to reconfigure a space for events and training days. Lockable castors keep them in place once positioned.

Planter room dividers and green walls. Taller, more continuous units that form a screen. The Bloom Room Divider holds multiple planters in a grid frame, while the Para Vert system links together in straight or curved runs. Choose these when you want a visual barrier that still lets light through.

Desk-end planter storage. Storage cabinets with a planting trough on top, designed to sit at the end of a bench desk run. The Scope Planter Unit, Cupboard Planter Short and Dune Planter all combine storage with greenery, so you gain filing space and zoning in one footprint. The Planter Extension Unit adds a planter to storage you already own.

Low and modular planters. The Furow, Platform and Fearne planters are lower troughs that define zones without blocking sightlines. They work well along walkways, beside breakout seating and around reception desks.

Workstations with integrated planting. The Bloom Touchdown combines a touchdown work surface with surrounding planters, creating a self-contained hot-desking point that doubles as a feature.

How to choose the right office planter

Start with the job. Decide whether the planter needs to divide, store, screen or simply decorate. A desk-end planter solves storage and zoning together; a mobile divider is better where layouts change often.

Check the height. Planters below roughly 1,100 mm define zones while keeping sightlines open across a seated office. Taller units and green walls create privacy for standing areas and walkways. Remember that plants add height on top of the unit.

Consider mobility. If you reconfigure your floor plan for events, team changes or hybrid working, choose units on lockable castors. For permanent zoning, static planters are more stable and often hold larger plants.

Match your finishes. Many planters in this range come in a choice of colours, laminates or timber finishes, so they can match your desks, storage and acoustic screens. Ask us for samples before ordering larger quantities.

Think about weight. A planted unit with soil and water is far heavier than the empty frame. Check floor loading on raised access floors and plan positions before planting, especially for larger dividers.

Plan for the whole floor. Planters work best as part of a zoning scheme alongside acoustic screens, desk dividers and storage. Our team can lay out your floor plan so each piece does a job.

Real plants or artificial?

Both work in our planters. Live plants give a more natural look and suit spaces with good daylight, but they need watering, feeding and occasional replacement. Many offices use a plant maintenance contract for this. Artificial or preserved plants need no maintenance and suit low-light areas, receptions and spaces with limited access out of hours.

Where a planter uses a drop-in liner or trough, you can switch between live and artificial planting later.
